OHP celebrates greater diversity in future of construction

News | Social Value

As the new academic year starts today, OHP are proud to share the news that over half of the students starting their Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) course at Les Quennevais School are female.

OHP and its partner company ROK Limited, are both industry adopters and sponsors of the DEC! course at Hautlieu School and Les Quennevais School (LQS) respectively.

During the first year of DEC! in Jersey, OHP have had the pleasure of working with LQS staff and students on several occasions:

1. November 2021: Youth engagement design competition

2. February 2022: Site visit to Jersey's largest residential project, Horizon on the Waterfront - organised by their DEC! industry adopter firm, ROK Limited

3. March 2022: OHP Legacy Director, Richard De Gruchy, delivered a presentation on the roles, responsibilities and relationship dynamics on a large construction project such as OHP

4. May 2022: Launch of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) in Jersey

5. June 2022: OHP Legacy Director, Richard De Gruchy, and OHP Building Information Management (BIM) Coordinator, Ruben Vivancos, delivered a BIM session for DEC! students

Head of DEC! at LQS, Katie Ferreira is passionate about her subject and inspiring more students to join: “DEC! is an exciting and innovative course that teaches young people about the built environment. It promotes strong cross curricular links with subjects such as Maths, Science and IT as well as educating about relevant issues such as climate change and encouraging sustainability. Students studying DEC! are also frequently supported by industry professionals, to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world and get a first-hand experience of what a range of construction jobs, such as Structural Engineering and Project Management, look like in action.”

OHP are delighted to be part of the change that nurtures greater diversity in the future of the construction industry.
